Dave Owens serves as a Professor of Management & Innovation at Vanderbilt’s Graduate School of Management and at the School of Engineering’s department of Engineering Management.

Genetically an engineer, Dave earned his PhD in management science and engineering at Stanford, holds an MS in engineering product design from the d.school at Stanford, has a BS in electrical engineering and is a registered professional electrical engineer (PE).

He advised NASA, The Smithsonian, Nissan, Gibson Music, Alcatel, Tetra Pak, Cisco, LEGO, The Henry Ford Museum, Mars and many other global organizations. His product design clients include Daimler Benz, Apple, Dell, Corning, Steelcase, whom he served while working at IDEO Product Development.

Dave also served as Chief Executive Officer of Griffin Technology, a large consumer electronics firm in the iPhone/iPad/iPod accessory market. In his client work and graduate syllabus, Dave constructs concrete strategies to drive positive change in all types of organizations.

His book Creative People Must Be Stopped! Six Ways We Stop Innovation (Without Even Trying) was published by Jossey-Bass Wiley in 2012. Dave pioneered and taught a massively open online course with 52,000 students.
